Journal 8 - Raymond Lowey

Image
Raymond Lowey was an industrial designer who gained fame for the magnitude of his designs. His work is especially prolific because it personally aspires a burning feeling to succeed. It has a work hard and be paid hard sort of attitude and it interesting to see how it can grow from something small to something larger.

"In 1953, CAA published the World Geo-Graphic Atlas". This was especially interesting because graphic design had reached a point where the audience is word-wide. As in, a map where every person could or should learn and experience. Being progressive and helping the world advance is something that has been a particular point for graphic design.

Journal 6 - Salvador DalĂ

Salvador Dali (1904 - 1989) is a Spanish realist who uses bizarre images in his work. He usually incorporates some expensive element to his sculpture. His eccentric and imaginative style brought great attention the details in his work. The Persistence of Memory emphasized the "softness" and "hardness" of Dali's theories. It is often referenced in popular culture, showing how widespread his work has been.

Victor Pierre Horta, a Beligian architect was the first to apply Art Nouveau to architecture from the decorative arts. His influence was especially well known in  European Art Nouveau architect. One of his most notable works was the construction of his Hotel Tassel in Brussels. The building used profound materials and decoration. It was incredibly innovative at its time.

Typeface has been an amazing contribution to not just graphic design but to society. It creates a unique view point of reading text, such that a cruel typeface written in blood differs drastically if it were written in neat, mechanically portioned typeface. Expression can be see in typeface and allow for further discovery in the author of the text. In this modern times, there are high-value companies innovating new typeface simply because they believe it can contribute greatly to their business. One such business is Airbnb. they recently announced that they have been working on a new type face called Airbnb Cereal.

Journal 3 - Thoughts about typography

Typography is something that has persisted throughout history even up until now. In graphic programming, it can be difficult to draw a single typographic print. Most technical people are aware that there has been a slew of research on how to draw typography on computers (your web page that has character, the letters on your operating system) on how to optimize for render speed and more. With the invention of typographic printing by Johann Gutenberg, it is especially interesting to understand how printing evolved throughout history. But the thing I am most intrigued about all of this is that simple prints can be studied to extent that there are university studies needed to expand on this work. Symbol recognition through block printing not only provides a way to display persistent information, but it can also be left up to interpretation, where the implementation is usually left up to the user. This is especially important when nuances play a part later.

Journal 2 - Alphabet system

Image
As always, I am always impressed with how an alphabet system might evolve from its inception. Knowing how other culture and languages influence each other and their writing system, which in turn affects their alphabet system design is incredible. There is always so much power to uncover from these kind of influences. There is always room for improvement and I strongly believe even now our own system will continue to evolve. Particularly, I hope that the refining process can be more open and democratized again and be spread throughout the nation's wealth of knowledge. For example, the cursive writing system Naskhi that eventually evolved into scripts is reminiscent of what I have learned in the past about Japanese. Japanese's Katakana, an alphabet usually to represent foreign words, was derived from cursive history as well. And there is a calligraphy where each word can symbolize many different meanings. Calligraphy can be essentially in any form, even Hangul. Due to thei

Journal 1 - Introduction

Hey guys! My name is Jasper Jeng. I currently live in San Jose, enjoying the beautiful weather every day. This course seems interesting to me because I have always wanted to have a deeper understanding on the origins of graphics design. Knowing the history could be beneficial to me when deciding the strategies involved in designing visuals for users. My main motivation to taking this class is to have a concrete foundation in creating websites! I hope that one day I can create nice websites for other people and be paid for them! This course will serve to be the starting point to my goals.
